Summer Safety

Summers are the most favorite time of year for most children. Even so, doctors know this time of year as the “trauma season.” This is because children are less supervised during this time of year, and they have a lot more free time to engage in outdoor activities. Such trauma relates to vehicle crashes, drownings, bike crashes, pedestrian incidents, falls, and other hazards. This summer nearly 3 million children under the age of 15 will be sent to the emergency room and more than 2,500 of these children will die from a trauma related injury.

Don’t take the summer off of safety. Know where your child is at and what he/she is doing at all times to reduce the chance of injury to your child.

Ride Safe

- Make sure your kids are secured in the appropriate child safety seat or belt for their age.
- Kids should always be secured in the back seat/

Swim Safe

- Always supervise young children near water, such as pools, spas, toilets, bathtubs, and buckets

- Make your child wear personal flotation devices when out on boats, or near open bodies of water, and when they participate in water sports.

Wheel Safe

- Make sure your child wears a safety helmet when riding their bike, scooter, or skateboard and skates. Make sure it properly fits them.

- Teach your child the rules of the road and practice obeying the traffic laws with them.

Walk Safe

- Never let your child cross the street alone if they are under the age of 10. Teach your child to obey the rules as a pedestrian.

- Give your child reflective materials to wear. Never let them walk alone at night. Make sure they have a flash light if they have to walk home as it is getting dark.

Play Safe

- Always supervise your child at playgrounds, or in the backyard. Watch out for the surface they are playing on. Make sure they play on safe surfaces like mulch, rubber, or fine sand.

- Make sure your child wears properly fitted equipment when playing sports.
